If there ever was a painting and icon that invited you to put yourself in the picture, this is it. The painting is Rublev’s famous icon of the Trinity and if you look carefully you’ll see a little rectangle on the table. In that rectangle was a piece of foil that acted as a mirror and invites you to see yourself at the table with the members of the Trinity.
Visio Divina*
Rather than tell you what to think or feel about this icon, I invite you to imagine yourself at the table. Gaze at the picture and open your heart. Be present, and be open.
Gently gaze at the picture and notice the shapes, colors, lines, details, and symbols.
Use your imagination and reflect on the feelings and longings that this image evokes. What memories or hopes are stirred? Make room within your heart for whatever wants to emerge. Linger here and be open.
Begin to notice what is being revealed and what you are feeling. Do you sense an invitation? What insights have you gained? What work would you like to do today?
Rest in the stillness and congratulate yourself on taking the time to be open and do this exercise.
