Opinions - I have known about noticing thoughts during meditation for a long time, but the encouragement to notice opinions too, by Pema Chodron in her excellent book “When Things Fall Apart,” is new to me.
Her rationale is our opinions, while sometimes valid and necessary, can rob of us our peace. On top of that, we tend to take them as truth which they are not. “They are just opinions.”
Being insistent about our opinions can be aggressive behaviour and she says in contrast to that, “cultivating non-aggression is cultivating peace.”
More from Pema, “If you find yourself becoming aggressive about your opinions, notice that. If you are nonaggressive about your opinions, notice that. Cultivating a mind that does not grasp at right or wrong you will find a fresh state of being. The ultimate cessation of suffering comes from that.”
